Checking Your Exam's Remote-Testing Requirements
Remote testing isn't available for every nursing exam, and where it is, the rules are set by the exam provider or your program — not by us. Here's how to confirm what applies to you.
Check with the right source first
Whether an exam can be taken remotely, and under what conditions, is decided by the exam owner (for example ATI, Elsevier/HESI, the NLN, Credentia, or a certification board) and, for school-administered assessments, by your individual nursing program. Always confirm current policy directly with them before assuming an exam can be taken from home.
Typical technical requirements
Remote-proctored exams commonly require a reliable internet connection, a computer that meets the provider's stated system requirements, a working webcam and microphone, and a quiet, private, well-lit room. Some providers also require a room scan, a valid photo ID, and specific browser or software installations ahead of time.
Test your setup before exam day
Most proctoring platforms offer a system check or practice run — use it several days before your exam, not the morning of, so you have time to fix any issues. Confirm your ID is current and matches your registration exactly.
Have a backup plan
Know your provider's policy for technical issues during the exam (what to do if your connection drops, for example) before you start. If remote testing isn't available or doesn't suit your situation, ask your program or the exam provider about in-person testing center options.
